Overview of the Japan Winter League (JWL)
The Japan Winter League is held annually at Koza Shinkin Stadium (the Spring Training facility for the NPB’s Hiroshima Carp) in Okinawa, Japan. The 2024 season will run from November 23 to December 19. This JWL is an opportunity for free-agent players to showcase themselves in front of scouts and team reps from the MLB, NPB, CPBL, Japanese Indy Leagues, and more. The league is also a place where current professional players can refine their skills during the offseason.
League Structure – Advanced League & Tryout League
The Japan Winter League is divided into two divisions: the “tryout” league and the “advanced” league. This setup allows players of varying skill levels to participate, with the chance to be scouted and signed by professional teams. The presence of both aspiring talents and seasoned professionals enriches the competitive atmosphere of the league and offers a diverse range of talent for scouts to evaluate.
*Players can be signed to professional contracts out of either league.
Player Development and Training – Professional Coaches, Facilities, Trainers, and Technology
Throughout the league, players have access to professional coaches and top-notch facilities aimed at honing their skills and preparing them for potential opportunities in the professional ranks. The focus on player development underscores the league’s commitment to nurturing talent and enhancing the overall quality of play. The 2023 season had Blast, Rapsodo, and coaches to help evaluate numbers to show players how this tech can help you improve your game.
Scouting Opportunities
The 2023 JWL included scouts and team representatives from the MLB, NPB, Various Japanese Independent Leagues (BC, Shikoku, Kyushu, and Hokkaido), and other leagues around the world scouting remotely.
Growth and Expansion
The Japan Winter League continues to expand each year, attracting a higher caliber of players, teams, and scouts. This growth reflects the league’s rising prominence within the baseball community and its increasing appeal as a premier destination for off-season training and talent evaluation.
