Personal

Whitney mixes up and down movement on her pitches with some lateral spin.  She throws a rise ball, drop curve, back-door curve and regular curve, along with a fast ball and change-up.  Her fastball also has some slight screw spin to it, giving it greater movement.  Her fastball velocity is in the mid-60s (mph), while her spin pitches range from the low to mid-60s.  She mixes her pitches well, but particularly likes to attack hitters on the inside.

She was primarily a pitcher in college, but she is comfortable playing first base, so she offers some versatility.

Whitney is a leader by example and is a very encouraging and supportive teammate.  She is very focused on continual improvement and consistently puts in extra work to achieve that objective.  She trains consistently in the off-season, as well, to gain strength and be in the best possible condition when opportunities arise.  “I will jump in and help teammates when they are down physically and mentally,” she says. “I am very big on mental health in athletes and I try to help others who are dealing with these issues. I aspire to be a light for those people and use my own journey to help show them that they will make it.”

Whitney is also very interested in coaching and would be an asset to a club’s staff.  She has some previous experience giving private lessons for youths and high school-aged players, as an assistant coach for a U-16 team, and as an intern at the college level  “My goal is to become a softball coach and have found such a joy in the coaching I have done to this point. I am very knowledgeable about the game and can teach in a way that the players can understand and relate to.”

Whitney Shepherd is one of the hardest working athletes I have had the pleasure to coach. She is always putting in work in the bullpen, weight room, and mentally which has led to the success she has had over the years. There is never a day that she doesn't want to improve her skills. She has proved to work hard not only in season but also out of season and comes back every year better. Not only does she focus on her getting better, but she has been a huge impact to our pitching staff with helping her fellow teammates improve on pitches and commanding the zone. Whitney's aspirations of becoming a coach comes natural to her and she will be a huge asset to any team because she brings so many qualities to the table. She is extremely coachable and loves what she does, and it shows when she is leading the team both on and off the field. I wish Whitney the best in everything she does and any coach that gets her will be extremely luck to have her!
