Personal

Thomas has caught at the highest level in France and excelled despite being a primary first baseman during his college career, but he was a catcher leading up to that, so he can play both.  He has had additional experience at third base and in the outfield.

He has also served as the hitting coach and bench coach for a college development program.

Nick Barese, his head coach at Merrimack College, says, “[Thomas’s] baseball IQ is off the charts, as is his work ethic and character. He has a smooth left-handed swing with power to both gaps. His arm is above-average for a first baseman, and he is one of the best defensive first basemen I’ve coached.”

Brian Griffin, associate head coach for Thomas’s team in the Futures Collegiate Baseball League, says, “[He] is equipped to hit for average and power. He has a smooth left-handed swing and doesn’t try to do too much at the plate, letting his bat speed and the loft in his stroke create natural pop. He also controls the strike zone, which is an important facet to have at the next level. Each day he came to the ballpark willing to work on defense, as well.”

Nick Barese

Merrimack College, Head Coach

Thomas is one of the best kids I've coached on and off the field. His baseball IQ is off the charts, as is his work ethic and character. Strictly pertaining to baseball he is a gifted player. He has a smooth left handed swing with power to both gaps. His arm is above average for a first basemen and he is one of the best defensive first basemen I've ever coached.

Brian Griffin

Westfield Starfires, Associate Head Coach

Tommy and I spent a great deal of time together in the summer of 2018, where he led the Futures Collegiate Baseball League in hitting. Tom is equipped to hit for average and power. He has a smooth left-handed swing and doesn't try to do too much at the plate, letting his bat speed and the loft in his stroke create natural pop. He also controlled the strike zone which is an important facet to have at the next level. Each day he came to the ballpark willing to work on defense as well, where we had him playing outfield positions and first base.

He goes hard at all times and any organization he represents will not regret the decision.

PJ Browne

Merrimack College/Winnipeg Goldeyes, Player/coach

Thank you for reaching out to me with regards to Thomas Joyce! Not only have I had the pleasure of coaching Thomas recently but I also got to play with him in his early days at Merrimack college. As a coach, Thomas is the type of leader and worker you look for in upperclassmen. On the field he expects the most of himself and prepares thoroughly in order to achieve what he wants, which is to win baseball games. He also understands that it takes more than just one player to make that possible. He is always one of the first voices in the clubhouse to make sure underclassmen are doing what they are supposed to be doing and keeps high expectations of his teammates in order to make sure everyone is ready come gameday. He offers advice and help to his colleagues that need it, and is always looking for extra work and reps each and every day, he sets a great example of the sacrifice it takes to win. Off the field Thomas is a great student and excellent young man. His work ethic and desire for success on the field carries over into everyday life. He is the last person anyone needs to worry about when it comes to off field issues.
Now as a pitcher I never felt more security at the first base position than when Thomas was playing. Easily the best defensive first baseman I ever had the pleasure to work with and be around. I knew on any given day he was going to make an impactful play on defense that would contribute to a win. He keeps runners from getting extra bases. He moves extremely well at the bag, is a picking machine, and has a good arm to go along with it. At the plate he was a staple in the middle of the lineup. He has plenty of pop and a smooth left-handed stroke. To go along with the tools he is also an intelligent hitter. He knows his approach and what he is looking for, he learns the tendencies of his opponents quickly, and is willing to change up his approach on the fly (given the situation at hand) and still find a way to contribute to team success.
Thomas is a player that many teams would be lucky to have, I'm glad I've had a chance to write on his behalf, I believe he has what it takes to play at very high levels he just needs the starting point!
