Personal

Russell has consistently hit for both power and average, and he also has a good eye at the plate, so he is adept at drawing walks.

He is a versatile player. He primarily plays the corner infield positions, as well as right field, but he also has experience at second base, left field and pitcher. He pitched some during three collegiate seasons. His velocity on throws ranges in the mid-80s from across the diamond and in the low 90s from the outfield (mph).

Russell plays in a men’s league and also works out and trains regularly to stay in top condition and to keep his baseball skills sharp.

As a teammate, Russell says he leads “by example in the batting cages and in the gym. I believe building a strong team bond is as important off the field as it is on the field. My presence in the dugout helps keep the team loose. I’ve always worked to bring my teams closer together.”

He also has coaching experience, having spent several years as an assistant at a baseball academy and at youth camps. He would be interested in helping the coaching staff of any club he’s with.

Russell says, “I have extensive knowledge regarding swing mechanics and understand the adjustments needed to improve them. More importantly, I believe the most important aspect to hitting is the mental side. I believe it is crucial to first to build confidence in players that I coach.”

Career Highlights

  • Averaged .358 with a .409 on-base percentage and .667 slugging percentage in junior college in 2018
  • Averaged .321 with .413 on-base percentage over junior college career
    • 42% of hits were for extra bases
  • Slashed .316/.432/.541 at William Woods University in 2019
    • 35% of hits were for extra bases
  • Played in Foothills Major Baseball Association in 2020/21
    • Slashed .424.548.879, with half of hits going for extra bases

Overseas Goals

Russell feels that an overseas opportunity would enable him to continue his baseball career while giving him the opportunity to travel and experience other environments and cultures. I addition, he has plans to collect used baseball equipment and distribute it in places and to organizations that could use it – “Playing overseas would be a way to spread the word of my idea.”

Russ played for me in 2019 with the Medicine Hat Mavericks. Russ was a total gamer and did whatever it took to get the job done. As an LHH OF, Russ could hit for both power and average when needed. I loved having Russ on my team. He is a great teammate and clubhouse guy, and I would take him on my team any day.

Nolan Rattai

Badlands Baseball Academy, Head Baseball Coach

Russell is a great team guy. He always has a good attitude & has a good work ethic. I personally played with Russell on the Medicine Hat Mavericks. He was our starting right fielder. I would consider his bat & arm strength his biggest strengths.
