Personal

Oscar is a left-handed gap-to-gap hitter.  He has usually hit in the first, second, or third slots in the batting order and makes consistent contact – not striking out often.

He is an above-average baserunner, which gives him an advantage when trying to steal or take the extra base.

Oscar offers a club versatility, having played every position except pitcher.  While in college, he was primarily an infielder.  Now, having fully recovered from a shoulder injury, he can play the outfield, and he has the speed to be effective at any of the three outfield positions.

He was a catcher earlier in his career and now considers that a secondary position, though he is very willing to play there.  He caught regularly during his time in the South Florida Collegiate League and consistently has a pop time of 2.0 seconds.

Oscar says that “being a good teammate is my best quality. I have always been a team-before individual-stats guy. I am a natural leader on the field and will always stay late to hit, take ground balls, hit the weights, or anything else necessary.

“I have been training every day with a long-time professional player and coach Victor Gutierrez, and I also train with many pro and college players. Training with high-caliber players keeps me sharp and ready to play. I have also been playing in very competitive men’s tournaments to keep myself in game shape.”

Jesus Luzardo, currently a starting pitcher for Major League Baseball’s Miami Marlins, says, “Oscar and I have known each other since we were 9 years old.  He is a great teammate – very selfless, and with a team-first mentality. Off the field he’s an even better man, displaying those same principles of selflessness and respect. Oscar has all the qualities and the makeup you look for in a competitor.”

Career Highlights

Has experience at several levels, including high school, junior college, NCAA Division II, collegiate summer leagues, men’s leagues, and in the Austrian first division Bundesliga.

During Oscar’s first overseas season with the Wiener Neustadt Diving Ducks, he led the Austrian first division in OBP (.564), and was in the top 5 of BA (.404), SB (14), 3B (3), and SLG (.702). In his 57 regular season At Bats, Oscar only had 6 strike outs showing his ability to put balls in play and find ways on base. Oscar played a crucial role in helping lead the Ducks to their first ever Austrian Championship.

Oscar also played for the International Stars during Prague Baseball week, after proving himself with the Stars ended up starting at 3B and hitting third in the lineup.

Oscar was nominated 2x as player of the week by Baseball Jobs Overseas and one time player of the week by Austrian Baseball Federation. His player of the week nomination was awarded after Oscar went 7 for 7 with 2 doubles, 2 triples and 4 BB in 11 PA on the weekend.

Oscar was one of three players picked by BBJO for top offensive performances of the 2021 season.

Oscar was also part of one of BBJOs top three top underdog performances of 2021, which was the championship run by his club Wiener Neustadt Diving Ducks.

During his second season overseas, Oscar played for the Mannheim Tornados in the German Bundesliga. In his time with the Mannheim, Oscar led the team in both BA (.353) and OPB (.431). During the season he spent majority of the time playing shortstop. But did make 2 appearances as a catcher and also pitched 3 scoreless innings for the team.

In the current 2023 season, Oscar is playing for the Montpellier Barracudas in the French first division. He has been the lead off hitter and shortstop for the club all season. Oscar was recently named an All star and played in the French league all star game. Montpellier is currently in first place and in hopes to compete to win the French championship.

Overseas Goals

Oscar’s goals for an overseas career are to experience new cultures, make new relationships, “and experience the game in a way I never imagined.”  He would hope to use his knowledge and experience to help advance baseball globally.

He shows up ready to compete, puts in the work, day in and day out. His work ethic is tough to beat with the mentality that he has to do whatever it takes to become the best player possible.

William Malinchak

West Boca Panthers, Head Coach

I have had the privilege of coaching Oscar Bustamante for eight years for the West Boca Panthers Black Travel Baseball Team in Boca Raton, Florida.

Oscar Bustamante is one of the finest young men I have ever coached. Oscar was one of the most well-liked and respected players on every team he has played.

He played every position, with the exception of pitcher, and plays them all well. Oscar is a top-of-the-order hitter and always gives you a good at-bat. Oscar is the first to practice and the last to leave, as he would help other players or the coaches.

Oscar would be an asset to any team and I feel extremely confident to recommend him.
