Personal
Oscar is a left-handed gap-to-gap hitter. He has usually hit in the first, second, or third slots in the batting order and makes consistent contact – not striking out often.
He is an above-average baserunner, which gives him an advantage when trying to steal or take the extra base.
Oscar offers a club versatility, having played every position except pitcher. While in college, he was primarily an infielder. Now, having fully recovered from a shoulder injury, he can play the outfield, and he has the speed to be effective at any of the three outfield positions.
He was a catcher earlier in his career and now considers that a secondary position, though he is very willing to play there. He caught regularly during his time in the South Florida Collegiate League and consistently has a pop time of 2.0 seconds.
Oscar says that “being a good teammate is my best quality. I have always been a team-before individual-stats guy. I am a natural leader on the field and will always stay late to hit, take ground balls, hit the weights, or anything else necessary.
“I have been training every day with a long-time professional player and coach Victor Gutierrez, and I also train with many pro and college players. Training with high-caliber players keeps me sharp and ready to play. I have also been playing in very competitive men’s tournaments to keep myself in game shape.”
Jesus Luzardo, currently a starting pitcher for Major League Baseball’s Miami Marlins, says, “Oscar and I have known each other since we were 9 years old. He is a great teammate – very selfless, and with a team-first mentality. Off the field he’s an even better man, displaying those same principles of selflessness and respect. Oscar has all the qualities and the makeup you look for in a competitor.”
