On the mound, he had 95 strikeouts in 73 innings for a Dodgers team that placed 11th out of 13. He also earned 5 of the team’s total 6 wins as pitcher with opposing hitters batting only .234 against the righty. At the plate, Nick led the team in nearly every offensive category, setting the pace with 4 HR’s, 31 hits, a slugging pct. of .558, and an OBP of .468. He also swiped 9 bases for the club. Additionally, Nick led the league with 10 runners caught stealing as catcher.
In 2018, he finished his spring season with the Bremen Dockers in the Baseball Bundesliga. After 36 games in the Bundesliga, Nick hit .353 (42-119) with 24 BB, 19 runs scored, and 22 RBI’s and additionally a .484 OBP with 11 SB. He also had a .966 fielding percentage while playing every position at some point for Bremen, but mostly at catcher. As a pitcher, Nick had a 2.66 ERA with 156 K’s in 100.1 IP despite being on the second-to-last place team in the league. Opposing hitters hit only .211 against him.
In his first season abroad, Nick finished up a campaign for the Golden Grove Dodgers of the South Australian Baseball League in the 2017/18 winter where he hit .348 (112 AB), scoring 31 of his team’s 101 runs. He also had an ERA of 2.53 with 73 strikeouts in 57 innings, stats good enough to place him 3rd in voting for league MVP. He is now looking for his next playing experience for the 2018-2019 winter.
In college, Nick was used primarily as a starting pitcher and catcher. Nick’s best year pitching was in 2016 as a junior where he posted a record of 6-1 with an era of 3.41 and 57 K’s in 68.2 innings work. 2016 was also his best year at the dish hitting .345 with 7 doubles and 2 triples. Nick has also shown the ability to swipe a bag with 14 SB in his senior season and 12 with Golden Grove.
Nick throws a cut fastball, changeup, curveball, slider both from over the top and sidearm, and also has been known to throw a knuckleball. His fastball sits in the mid–upper 80’s and tops out at 90+. His pop time as a catcher sits around 1.9 and loves picking off runners from behind the dish. Defensively, Nick can play nearly every position at a high level and was often used in college in the outfield and at second base.
As a batter Nick is mainly a singles hitter who always puts the ball in play with solid contact, but can also show some power driving the ball in the gaps and even tacking on a few home runs. He has also shown an ability to bunt very well.
Nick is also a passionate coach who has been coaching baseball since 2012 in his hometown of West Hartford and was an Ice Hockey coach at his former high school Loomis Chaffee. He is excited about the opportunity to teach the game of baseball overseas as an ambassador of the game.
Nick is fluent in Spanish, but can also speak Italian and Portuguese, is now certified with German level A2.
Any club seeking a proven two-way player who is also passionate about coaching should reach out to Nick for an interview as he most definitely brings a lot of value to the table for any club looking to improve on multiple levels.
