Personal

Joe Wittig is an extremely versatile and athletic 6’1″ 195 pound shortstop and pitcher from Sonoma, California who is currently playing in his 5th season overseas playing for the Prague Eagles of the Czech Extraliga, his second season with that club. For the 2017-18 winter Joe played his second season for the Henley and Grange baseball club in South Australia where he hit .338 with 3 home runs in 28 games. He also held down a 2.70 era while striking out 47 over 43.1 innings of work (8 starts).

In 2017 he played in the Czech Republic for the Prague Eagles where he was the regular season batting champ with a batting average of .403, an OBP of .503 and a SLG of .547. Joe showcased his power by belting 3 triples and 4 homeruns while also showing off his speed swiping 15 bags.

Although he started his overseas career as a two-way player, Joe had not pitched since TJ surgery in 2016 until late July 2017 when he appeared in two games in the Czech playoffs pitching a total of 5 innings while holding down a 1.80 era.

Joe was a preseason all american in high school and first team all state in California in 08′. He then went on to play two years at Santa Rosa Junior College. Post college he went on to play for several independent professional and semi-professional teams in the California area including the Vallejo Admirals, East Bay Lumberjacks and in the Redwood Empire Baseball League.

In the summer of 2015 he took his career overseas for the first time to play for the Fürth Pirates of the German Regional League Southeast, a league that imports many Americans. For Joe it was a foot in the door and a chance to prove himself overseas. At the end of the season he held the league’s best era, WHIP, K/IP, and Opp. Bavg and was also the league’s best hitter. That summer he joined the Pirates for an international tournament in Austria called Finkstonball where he won the best pitcher and best hitter awards.

In 2016 Joe signed to play in Italy with Novara but had to back out of the deal to undergo Tommy John surgery that March. For the 2016-2017 winter, upon recovering from TJ, Joe was picked up for his bat to play winter baseball in Adelaide, Australia for Henley and Grange in the South Australian State League.

Joe throws a high 80’s fastball, 74 mph curveball, low 80’s cutter, 76-80 mph slider and a fork ball in the mid 70’s.

Joe also has a nice coaching background both as a private instructor and a high school coach. Joe has coached a Junior Varsity high school team to a sectional championship and has been with Steve Hornings Sportstime Baseball Academy for over 10 years, where he helps run camps with up 75 kids while conducting individual training on the side. In Australia he has been told by parents that he is “a natural coaching kids”.

Testimonials

Tom Macari

GM of the East Bay Lumberjacks

"Two years ago Joe Wittig was a shortstop/outfielder, who mainly hit leadoff or second in our team's first professional season in the Pacific Association (the East Bay Lumberjacks).  Joe showed gap power and hitting nearly .300.  He also tried out as a pitcher in the league-wide tryout and was gunned at 88 mph.

He pitched in a short-season winter league for our team and was voted the league Cy Young Award winner after going 4-0 with a 2.08 ERA and 40 strikeouts in only 26 innings."

David Burns

Founder of this website and assistant coach of the International Stars
dburns@baseballjobsoverseas.com

"I have witness Joe play in two tournaments in Europe where he played for the International Stars (a team comprised of imports from across Europe). At Finkstonball in Attnang-Puchheim, Austria he won the best pitcher and best hitter awards and at Prague Baseball Week in the Czech Republic he had 5 K's and an era of 0.00 in three innings of work and hit .333. Joe is the most intense baseball player I have ever witnessed on the field. He comes to play and plays hard from the moment he ties the laces until he takes them off. I mean he is the kid diving for the ball in pre-game bp. To other players it may come off as a little too intense, but he is a coaches dream. He swings a very good bat from the left side and as a right handed pitcher he has some dirty stuff and could also be a solid starter almost anywhere overseas."
