I am a closing/relief pitcher at Columbia University in New York. During my first 2 years of college, I was a Captain at Whitman College and was an All-Northwest Conference selection. At Columbia, in my junior year, I posted a 3-0 record with a 3.60 ERA earning 2 saves in 20 innings pitched. That summer (2019) I was an all-star in the Northwoods League with a sub 2.00 era and 51 innings pitched. This past season was taken by COVID. My pitching repertoire includes 3 pitches; forkball (77-80MPH), 2 seam fastball (83-87MPH), slider (72-75MPH). At Columbia and during the Northwoods league I was a bullpen catcher as well and I got some at-bats.

Overseas goals:

  • Extend my career a little longer before hanging them up
  • Use overseas as a stepping stone into professional ball in the U.S.
  • Experience new cultures and meet new people
  • Use my knowledge and experience to help grow the game globally

Columbia University, Head Coach

Jimmy Smiley is a player with tremendous leadership traits. He came into our program as a transfer in fall 2018 and made an immediate impact on our team and our pitching staff.

His work ethic is second to none and he has a passion for baseball. He played a huge role in our bullpen in 2019 on our lead up to a championship playoff appearance. He took the ball on every occasion we asked and competed at a very very high level. Jimmy is fearless on the mound- and it spread to others on our staff.

The 2020 season was cut short by covid. Jimmy was a huge part of our bullpen this past spring. He took on any role we asked of him. He loves the game and loves to compete.

Jimmy also can/wants to play other positions.
He's a very durable athlete and has caught some and hit some in his summer ball time in the northwoods league- a prestigious collegiate summer league in the united states.

I love Jimmy's attitude and work ethic and would be very successful every year if I had a team of guys who had the desire he has.

Erik Supplee

Columbia University, Pitching Coach

Jimmy was an integral part of our program for the two years he was with us. As a transfer, the returning players gravitated towards him immediately. He has an infectious personality and displays good leadership traits.

As a player he was a quality bullpen piece for us. His biggest strength is his strike throwing ability with multiple pitches. His fastball has some sink and run to it and uses it to get ground balls early in the count. He had a lot of success with his slider because of his ability to throw it in the strike zone early in the count and when he backed himself into fastball hitting counts. The third pitch is his splitter, which he likes to use with 2ks either beneath the zone or throwing it above the zone and dropping it in for a taken strike.

The most important thing I can say about Jimmy is that his teammates and coaches love him. He is completely selfless and will do whatever it takes to get things done in training, the weight room, practice, and games. A quick story: we had a pivotal weekend series at Yale that we ended up sweeping. The day before we left for Yale, we had some roster issues and ended up not having a bullpen catcher. Jimmy warmed up every pitcher in the bullpen as a catcher (we used 6 relievers not including Jimmy) and also recorded a win and a save in games 2 and 3. When the roster situation occurred with our bullpen catcher, he immediately approached our staff and let us know he wanted the responsibility and was ready to pitch afterwards without any questions asked.

I would take Jimmy on our roster every year. He is 100% a glue guy that almost all successful teams have.

Thanks, Jimmy! Sounds great. Here's my statement for Jimmy Smiley:

Jimmy is the ultimate competitor. As a member of our program here at Whitman, his tenacity and drive to push himself to be the best that he could be in every aspect of what he did shined through on a daily basis. His work ethic was second to none and his passion for the game makes everyone around him better, which will only serve him well as he continues his playing career.

With a true three pitch mix for strikes, Jimmy's pitchability and understanding of how to attack hitters has allowed him to continue to be successful as he's progressed through his playing career. We utilized him in several different roles during his time here given his flexibility, ability to generate weak contact in critical situations, and because we wanted him to be on the mound in as many high leverage situations as possible given the competitor that he is. Add in his strong leadership qualities, understanding of game situations, and willingness to take the ball at any time for his team, and you have the winner that Jimmy is both on and off the field.

Jimmy helped our program reach new heights throughout his time. He has the mentality, desire, and ability to be successful in all that he does, and is the guy that you want on your team when you take the field every day.
