Personal
Jarryd Samsing adds versatility, speed, defense, consistent contact, and a solid arm to any lineup. roster, or position.
Jarryd grew up playing Catcher and 3B from age 7 and continued on to play club baseball all the way until 18u even as a 16 year old. At Verrado high school, he developed his speed through his football training, so his efforts were needed in the OF and behind the dish because of his quick transfer and arm strength. At Whittier College, he played outfield with appearances at catcher, SS, 2B, and as a relief pitcher.
He has proven gap to gap contact with instances of raw power. A young, 23 year old Amatuer, Jarryd is still a high-follow prospect with so much more to give to the game. When COVID hit, Jarryd wanted to continue his education to make sure he had his degree, that meant he had to give up baseball for 1.5 seasons. Determined to get that back, Jarryd has only amassed more strength, explosiveness, power, and HUNGER.
With his 5’10 190lb frame, he comes off as a thick-legged fullback but actually covers ground like a gazelle. This is thanks to his continuous efforts at speed and explosive training. His speed also compliments his defensive skills and his arm. His versatility truly shows when placed at multiple positions as he is able to adapt to the arm angles of each. An overall solid defender ay any position as he truly takes pride in helping his pitchers.
Overall, he is a hungry collegiate athlete that got his career cut short due to COVID-19. He is a fierce competitor that wants the ball on every single pitch. Jarryd does NOT take pitches off as he is a team guy first. He enjoys teaching the game as much as he loves playing it but since his career got cut short, playing has been a primary focus.
He still trains 5 days a week with recovery on the weekends (as well as coaching the youth). He regularly takes LIVE ABs against high-level Southern California HS pitchers(once a week). He regularly catches bullpens and regularly takes BP/infield ground balls(twice a week for each). And Jarryd spends all five days of the week in the weight room improving my game whether it means strength, explosiveness, stability, balance, and mobility. He also long tosses once a week with his 12u club team. He throws way farther than them but makes them “outfield relay” the ball back as he can long toss well over 100 yards.
Super athletic, Jarryd grew up playing football and baseball in Arizona competitively and after Verrado HS in 2017, he received 2 football offers (NCAA D3) and 12 baseball offers(3 NAIA’s, 2 D2’s, and 7 D3). He ended up taking the D3 California offer to Whittier College because it was a dream of his to play college baseball in California and receive a quality education from a small, private, liberal arts college. He then graduated amid the pandemic in 2021 with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.
ON THE FIELD
60yd dash: 6.74s
10yd split: 1.58s
Can run to first base under 3.5s
Catching: Excellent baseball IQ and can receive/frame at a high level, knows the many ways to set up pre-pitch, can throw runners out/block baseball from a One Knee Down position. A threat to baserunners as he has a good arm and a quick transfer. pop Time is close to a 2.2
INF Velo: MID 8s with upside. Nimble in the field and super athletic and fast. can play 3B, SS, and 2B with range and a cannon. Knows how to create himself a good hop. Smooth transfer from all infield arm angle slots.
OF: The first step is always back. Will track baseballs with ease and throw runners out. He makes it look easy out there and often knows how to deceive a base runner. Will cover a lot of ground. Very quick transfer. Long arms aid him in making shoestring catches and when he lays out.
JARRYD IS NEVER AFRAID TO LAYOUT
ON THE MOUND. Jarryd Sits 80-83, tops at 85 with more in the tank. He features a Cut-FB @83, SL @ 80, CB @ 75, and a Changeup @78. Relies heavily on cut fastballs and sliders to induce contact. Has a natural cut. Pitches to contact. When far ahead, used CB and CH more often. RHP with a 3/4 slot and changes his timing often, whether in the stretch or the windup, finds a way to throw off batter timing with his delivery. Holds runners well and is very athletic off the mound. Well balanced on the mound and moves well.
MENTAL: This kid is hungry to play, has tons of potential and has shown versatility in any lineup, from Club, HS, and all the way to college. He is aggressive, confident, plus athleticism, and can become any type of player he wants with his toolset. Speed, defense, contact, power, and a great arm. Jarryd knows how to deal with failure as this game is a game of failure.
Career highlights
Jarryd slashed a .262 AVG as a starting freshman. In 40 games his sophomore year(2018-2019), Jarryd then improved to .283 AVG, cut his strikes outs in half, scored 21 runs, and swatted 34 hits on the season. 12 of those hits were for extra bases, in which Jarryd also led the team that year.
Started 36 games as a freshman in college playing all outfield positions. Was a team captain by junior year(2020). Jarryd posted a career .261 AVG in 2.3 years at WC with 22 Extra-base hits while also playing solid defense with a career fielding percentage of .958 and 158 putouts in 166 chances. He has a career 8 assists from the Outfield. In total, Jarryd gathered 72 hits, 21 RBI, 43 runs scored, and 94 total bases.
Coaching
Jarryd Samsing brings multiple perspectives and tons of positivity. Confidence is the name of this game and is very significant to life. He focuses on not only the sports aspect but the mental training, and moral aspect of this game and what it teaches, and how it applies to our daily lives. His coaching style for youth is much more laid back as he focuses on the fun of the game. With his HS clients and his brother, Jacob Samsing, he can focus on the smallest of details and mental cues while also relying on video analysis to d any work with mechanics. He loves to rely on metrics and video analysis and can get very creative with any sort of baseball drill, especially if it pertains to hitting. But the game is simple, confident players usually win and if they don’t win, they know how to deal with failure. But nonetheless, the game is about how fun and how hard it is. The classic game of failure. Sometimes in life, you hit a slump. The most important thing is the next pitch or the next beautiful day. He tells his kids and teammates prior to games, “it’s a great day to be great, the choice is yours”.
Overseas Goals
Jarryd’s goal is to continue his baseball career to prove his true professional potential all while meeting new people, immersing himself in new cultures, and learning something new every day whether that be culture, self-reflection, or baseball. Everything gives you a chance to learn something.
