Cody played high school baseball in a suburb of Memphis, Tennessee. Memphis has been known for its competitive baseball atmosphere as shown by the number of professional athletes from the area. Cody started at shortstop for the Collierville Dragons where he earned academic and athletic honors throughout his high school career. During his time at Collierville, under then-head coach Jeff Hopkins (former University of Memphis – Head Coach), he led the Dragons to a Regional championship, District championship, and State Sectionals appearance, before ending the season at 36-9 and ranked by USA Today as the #14 team in the country.
After high school, Cody chose to pursue his education and earned his Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology with a minor in Business Administration in May of 2017. After completing his undergraduate degree at the University of Tennessee – Knoxville, Cody has been involved with baseball but from the coaching perspective. He has coached at all levels, including youth, high school, and prospect travel teams.
Cody’s coaching philosophy stems from his grandfather, who was a notable high school varsity baseball and football coach in the greater Memphis area in the 1970s and 1980s. His philosophy is built around three core principles :
- Leading/Teaching by way of example
- Biomechanical Efficiency
- Athlete Psychology
These three core principles allow Cody to develop relationships with his players and get them to perform at higher levels than most thought they could achieve themselves.
Since expanding his role to coaching, Cody has developed an itch to experiment with himself on the field again. This time as a Starting Pitcher. Although he is not limiting himself to other roles, such as in the infield/at the plate, he would enjoy the opportunity to coach as well as put the spikes on again He does not have any statistics yet, but with the right organization and the right situation, the statistics will come.
